Support    RB-x30    The Response Pad DIP Switches

Summary

For maximum compatibility with application programs, the response pads offer the following:

Serial Port Emulation: Once installed, the USB drivers setup a pseudo serial port. Therefore, application programs that used to support the serial port can continue to do so with no modifications.

Multiple Protocols: The RB-x30 response pad supports different “protocols” or formats in which the data is sent to the computer. The red switches (called DIP switches) on the back of the response pad provide a convenient way to select the desired protocol.

This document describes the DIP switch settings. However, if you already know which program you want to use your response pad with, e.g. SuperLab or E-Prime, see the RB Series support home page for a list of programs.

The Switch Settings

The DIP switches are located on the back of the response pads, to the left of where the USB cable plugs into the pad:

It is important to note that the response pad “reads” the position of the switches only when it is powered up. If you change them, you will need to unplug the USB connector and plug it in again for the new settings to take effect.

When shipped, all the switches are in the down (On) position. Switches 1 and 2 determine the protocol used. Switch 3 determines the baud rate (speed) at which the data is sent. Switch 4 is not currently used and should always be down.
