Support    RB-x30    Installing USB Driver for Linux

Cedrus does not officially support Linux. However, we are happy to provide some instructions on how to get started.

Installation

The RB Series response pads use USB interface chips manufactured by FTDI. Recent versions of the Linux kernel include the required FTDI drivers. You can also obtain the drivers from FTDI’s website.

Pads Shipped Starting June 2011

No particular action is necessary: Linux’s built-in FTDI drivers should recognize the response pad automatically.

Pads Shipped Before June 2011

Response pads shipped prior to June 2011 used the same FTDI chips but were programmed with a custom Cedrus USB product ID. A change in Microsoft’s security policy, starting with Windows Vista, required that we revert to the standard FTDI product ID.  You have two options:

Change the product ID inside your response pad. This approach is highly recommended if you will be using the response pad on Macs or Windows PCs as well. See this page.

Let Linux “know” about the Cedrus USB product ID. To do so, edit the file /etc/modules and add the following line:

ftdi_sio vendor=0403 product=f228

This must be done with root privileges (e.g. using sudo). After rebooting, the response pad should show up under /dev/serial and as /dev/ttyUSBx where x is a number (usually 0).

Cedrus is grateful to Dr Gijsbert Stoet for this helpful tip.

Programming

Cedrus has a Python open source library that was tested on Ubuntu Linux. See this page for additional information.
